Polarizing efficiency, the amount of glare that is blocked, is the most important characteristic to look for. A thin foil inside the lens is responsible for this polarizing effect. There is a large quality and price difference between various types of polarizing foils and lens production methods. Foil placement is tricky and critical, and needs to be within .4 to .8 mm from the front of the lens for maximum optical clarity.

Next, the ability to chemically adhere the polarizing film to the lens and keep it from separating is important for the longevity of the lens. We don't want the polarizing film to start flaking off, and as such it's important to pay attention to the quality of the adhering process.

Extended exposure to heat can change the color hue and intensity of the lenses, so color stability is crucial to proper long term usability. Putting your glasses in their case when they're not in use is the best way to ensure that the color of the lenses does not change.
