Spherical vs. Aspheric Lenses
Conventional lenses always have a curved surface in the front, which increases as prescription power increases. This increase in the curve causes distortion when looking at the person wearing the lens. A person with a heavy plus prescription will have eyes that appear magnified in their glasses, whereas a person wearing a strong minus lens will have their eyes decreased in size.

Aspheric lenses are designed to have a flatter curved surface. When compared to spherical lenses, these lenses are much thinner, lighter and flatter. This makes for more comfortable wear and a more cosmetically pleasing appearance. For plus lenses, there is less bulging of the lens from the frame, giving the glasses a more flattering profile. The effect is less dramatic in minus lenses, but aspheric lenses still provide a noticeable reduction in the thickness of the lens edges. In plus lenses, the aspheric lens helps make the wearer look more natural by reducing the “bug-eye” effect that spherical plus lenses have.
One slight drawback for aspheric lenses is that the wearer may experience slight distortion at the outer peripheral edges of the glasses, depending on his or her prescription. However, the benefits far outweigh this one negative consequence.
Most aspheric lenses are also high index lenses, which naturally causes more reflections off the front and back surfaces of the lens. In order to counteract this phenomenon, Visio-Rx delivers these lenses, just like all the other ones, with a complete Cristiline® ArmorCoat Advanced coating package that includes AR coating, at no additional charge to you.
The following lenses are aspherical lenses:
- 1.58 Xirm
- 1.61 High index
- 1.67 Extra high index
- 1.74 Premium high index
- All multifocal lenses
- All fully personalized lenses, which can be identified by the abbreviation "DRP" in the name.
Aspheric lenses are a great choice for higher powered prescriptions, and with our prices you can go ahead and give them a whirl without breaking the bank.
